Music can be powerful medicine for anyone, but especially people with dementia.

According to Music and Memory.org, music is so deeply rooted in our conscious and unconscious minds, it can actually awaken the brains of people with neurological conditions like Alzheimer's disease.

Skeptical? Watch this stunning clip from the inspiring full-length documentary Alive Inside.

Music doesn’t just benefit people with advanced dementia (as the video clip demonstrates with startling clarity). It can help people at most any stage of the disease, improving their mood, boosting their thinking skills, and lessening their need for certain medications.

The personalized playlist

The key is to find music that’s personally meaningful to them. Enter the personalized music playlist.

Start by finding out what tunes the person listened to when they were younger. Load them on a device connected to a set of headphones. Press play and observe the results.

The Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County can help you set up a personalized playlist at no cost. So can a select number of other local Alzheimer Societies in Ontario.
