Ontario Orchard Applesauce

Apple season is in full swing in Ontario, and the image showcases an easy applesauce recipe that's high in fiber. The applesauce can be used as a dessert or snack, or incorporated into baking recipes. It's freezer-friendly, and the flavor can be customized by using different types of apples to alter the sweetness and tartness.

Total time

Servings

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs of apples (a mix of apples gives the most depth of flavor)
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup of white or brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp (or more) of ground cinnamon
  • pinch of salt

Steps

  1. Place apples, lemon juice, water, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a large pot (or Dutch oven) and stir.
  2. Bring mixture to a boil over high heat.
  3. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and cover with a lid to simmer for 30 minutes (or until the apples are soft).
  4. Once cooked, remove from heat and use an immersion blender, food processor, or blender to create a puree.
  5. Serve warm or cold.
